While most people use GPS to get from point A to point B, a new breed of adventure seekers are using their GPS devices to find hidden caches as part of a high-tech outdoor treasure hunting game — Geocaching.
The basic idea is for players to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, using their GPS-enabled devices and then share their experiences online. And with 1,805,886 active geocaches and more than 5 million geocachers worldwide, this exciting outdoor adventure game is not only catching on, but spurring entire communities, groups and organizations around the world to get out and competitively explore. The typical cache is a small waterproof container that houses a logbook where the geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with their established code name. Larger containers such as plastic storage containers or ammunition boxes can also contain items for trading, usually toys, coins, memorabilia or trinkets of little value.
